Empowering the Community, UMI Lecturer Team Holds Ecoenzyme Training and Ecodigital Campaign for Mothers of Majlis Taklim

Makassar, 7 October 2024 – Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) has once again demonstrated its commitment to the Community Service (PkM) program through a training program entitled Empowering Muslim Women through the Ecodigital Campaign and Processing Organic Waste with the Ecoenzyme Concept. This activity was carried out by a team of UMI lecturers with full support from the UMI Community Service Institute (LPkM) with the location of the activity at the Nurul Nisa Borong Jambu Taklim Council, Antang TPA, Manggala District, Makassar City.

Team leader, Dr. Zelfia, S.IP., M.M., M.Sos.I., together with two other members, Dr. Abd Gafur, SKM., M.Kes., and Dr. Hadawiah, S.E., M.Sc., led this activity involving two students, namely Nahda Adzkiyah and Nurhidayah Qauliah K. The training, which was held on Saturday, October 5 2024, targeted members of the taklim assembly and mothers who live around the Antang TPA.

"This activity aims to empower the community, especially mothers, in processing organic waste into environmentally friendly products, namely ecoenzymes, as well as equipping them with digital communication skills to spread environmental messages effectively," said Dr. Zelfia.

Organic Waste Processing Innovation

In the training session, participants were taught the process of making ecoenzymes, organic solutions produced from fermenting kitchen waste such as fruit peels, vegetables, sugar and water. This product has various benefits, ranging from waste management, environmental cleaning, to use in the agricultural sector.

"This fermentation process takes around three months. With this training, we hope that the participants will be able to recycle organic waste, so that they can reduce the volume of waste while creating added value from household waste," explained Dr. Zelfia.

Ecodigital Campaign for Environmental Awareness

Apart from technical training, this activity also includes an ecodigital campaign, namely training on the use of digital media to increase environmental awareness. Participants are taught to use social media, digital platforms and applications to disseminate information and educate the public about the importance of preserving nature.

"This ecodigital campaign aims to equip participants with technology-based communication skills, so that they can contribute to building public awareness regarding environmental issues more broadly," he added.

Providing Real Impact on Society

It is hoped that this community service program will have a long-term impact on residents around the Antang TPA. Not only does it reduce organic waste, but it also opens up opportunities for the community to innovate in managing waste independently.

"We are optimistic that after this training, community partners will not only be able to produce ecoenzymes, but also become agents of change in promoting environmentally friendly lifestyles through digital platforms," concluded Dr. Zelfia.

This step is part of UMI's ongoing efforts to create synergy between the academic world and society in facing global environmental challenges. Through collaboration and innovation, UMI is committed to continuing to support sustainable development in Indonesia.
