UMI Lecturer Processes Milkfish Scale Waste as a Collagen Mask

The UMI service lecturer team processed milkfish scale waste, which was initially just thrown away and had no benefits and only rotted, into a mask that contains collagen which is useful for naturally rejuvenating the skin.ย  This service team is chaired by Aminah, S.Farm., M.Sc. with apt team members. Selpida Handayani, S.Farm., M.Sc. and Dr. apt. Hasnaeni, S.Sc., M.Sc. located in one of the UMI service villages, namely Wiring Tasi village, Suppa sub-district, Pinrang district. This service activity was carried out in Pucak Village, Maros Regency from August to December 2024 together with partners who are milkfish pond groups.

In this activity, the UMI Internal Service Lecturer team, Hasnaeni, provided training by adding insight into the natural benefits of collagen for the body. Although many foods can be used as a source of collagen such as egg whites, nuts, citrus fruits, broccoli, tomatoes etc. ย

According to Selpida Handayani, fish scales have the advantage of being a source of collagen in the form of masks because they can reduce waste from the fishing industry. Aminah added that the potential of milkfish scale waste is an innovation in the increasing trend of natural health and beauty from fish collagen which is in great demand because it is easily absorbed by the body compared to other animal collagen (cow or pig). Even though the collagen extraction process requires special technology and compliance with strict quality standards, the UMI PKM team is optimistic that this product can become a high-value resource while helping to protect the environment.
