UMI LECTURERS TRAIN TEENAGERS TO INCREASE ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE THROUGH THE UTILIZATION OF TELANG FLOWERS INTO HERBAL TEA AND DIGITAL MARKETING IN THE MANGGALA DISTRICT, MAKASSAR CITY

The Community Service activity carried out by UMI FKM Lecturers in Manggala Village is providing economic independence training through the use of Telang Flowers into Herbal Tea. Apart from that, teenagers are also trained on how to market products through social media owned by teenagers. This service activity is funded by LPkM UMI. The aim of this service activity is to improve the economy and health of teenagers by utilizing butterfly pea flowers which grow widely around Manggala Village.

The training given to teenagers in making herbal tea is how to dry telang flowers at a certain temperature using an oven, the temperature is set in such a way that the quality of the telang flowers is not reduced, after that, blending the telang flowers, the telang flowers which are already in the form of a coarse powder are put into a teabag. The service team also explained digital marketing. Because teenagers already have social media accounts, the service team just needs to direct teenagers on more interesting online sales procedures.

Head of the Hasriwiani Service Team Habo Abbas, SKM., M.Kes., Ph.D explained that telang flowers have many benefits, especially for teenagers, namely that they can facilitate menstruation, eliminate acne and eliminate body odor and improve body fitness. This herbal tea is the same as the hijua tea that is sold in Japan. "We hope that this tea can be served at state and national ceremonial events," he added in an interview after the training.

The implementation of this service was carried out on October 18 2025 in the POKJA KB Manggala Hall with a team consisting of Nurul Husnah, S.St., M.Keb., and this service was assisted by 3 students: Ilmi Kumaera, Ayunda and Alifa Fauziah. This service was attended by around 20 teenagers aged 15-18 years. They were very enthusiastic in participating in this training.

"This activity is very useful for us teenagers because it turns out that butterfly pea flowers can be made into herbal tea and the benefits are very many, and most importantly it can also increase our pocket money if we make it into a product that we will sell because the method of making it is very easy, the ingredients are very easy to get and the sale can be done."It's done online and we also mostly have social media, namely Instagram and TikTok,"said the Head of PIK youth Narisya Purnama.
