Digital Literacy and Scientific Writing Training for Madrasah Tsanawiah and Madrasah Aliyah An Nashar Timor-East Makassar Students
The UMI FSIKP Community Service lecturer team carried out Community Service activities entitled
"Digital Literacy Training and Popular Scientific Writing for Madrasah Tsanawiyah Students andMadrasah Aliyah An Nashar Timor-East Makassar.” This activity is part of the programUMI's Flagship PKM which focuses on Impactful Campuses, is supported by the Community Service Instituteto the Community (LPkM) UMI (1/10/2025)
This program aims to meet community needs across sectors through empowerment andtraining that suits the lecturer's expertise. In this context, digital literacy becomes very important,especially in the current information era, where students are required to not only be consumers of informationbut also quality content producers. According to UNESCO, digital literacy is the ability tofinding, using, and sharing information effectively and ethically, which is a skillessential in an increasingly connected world.
UMI as an educational and da'wah institution is committed to providing a positive impact throughimplementation of PT UMI's Chess Dharma. This training is very relevant to the needs of students and teachersbuilding a golden generation, in line with Astacita's vision of strengthening human resource development throughdigital literacy intelligence. It is hoped that students can be productive, creative and have character, as wellable to write scientific papers since at madrasa level.
This activity was enthusiastically welcomed by Madrasah An Nashar East Timor. Head of Madrasah, A.Umu Aemana, S.Pd., MA, expressed her appreciation and hope that similar activities would continuecontinues. He stated, “This activity is very important in preparing a literate young generationdigital while being able to think critically and scientifically. Through this training, hopefully the participants canimprove the ability to manage information wisely and foster enthusiasmwrite quality scientific papers.” This statement is in line with research that showsthat scientific writing skills can improve students' critical thinking abilities, whichis an important competency in 21st century education.
Likewise, St. Muthiah Morerah, S.I.Kom, S.Pd, M.Pd, Principal of MTs An Nashar, alsoexpressed his gratitude and pride for the attention of LPkM UMI which continues to inspire
his school. "We are very happy with the presence of the UMI lecturer team who are inspiring in sharing knowledgeand inspiration for our students. This training provides new insight into howutilize technology correctly while fostering an interest in writing from an early age. Hopefully"collaborations like this will continue in the future," he said.
The service team led by Dr. Abd Majid, S.Sos.I., M.Si, consisting of Muhammad Idris, S.Sos.,M.I.Kom, and Poetri Setiawan B, S.Kom. M.T, as well as alumni Uswatun Hasanah, S.I.Kom, M.I.Kom andstudent Fauziah Nur Inayah who supported the activity publication process. This activity is ongoingsmoothly for one month, 1 week of theory and the next 2 weeks of practical assignments, attended by 5 teacherscompanion and 30 students (15 from MA and 15 from MTs).
The material presented includes the use of digital information technology and preventionspread of hoaxes and crimes on social media. According to data from the Internet Service Providers AssociationIndonesia (APJII), the level of internet penetration in Indonesia continues to increase, so students need to be equippedwith the skills to navigate the digital world safely and effectively. Digitally savvy studentsare expected to be more skilled and wise in reading and selecting information, and able to writescientific work in accordance with their field of study.
In the first session, Muhammad Idris, S.Sos., M.I.Kom explained that digital literacy is not justthe ability to use technology, but also understand, select and produce informationresponsibly. “In today's digital era, students must have strong literacy skillsto not only become technology users, but also creators of useful content. Through"In this activity, we want to instill the values of critical thinking and media ethics from an early age," he saidin line with the statement from the American Library Association which emphasizes the importance of literacyinformation as a basis for effective education.
Meanwhile, in the second session, Dr. Abd Majid underlined the importance of reading informationdevelopment of science and technology to improve the ability to write scientific papers. “Before writing the workscientific, you need insight by reading a lot of previous scientific works. It's not justto fulfill school assignments, but also to train reasoning and a frame of mind to be able to do it"express ideas logically and systematically in writing," he explained. Research shows thatActive reading can improve analytical abilities and writing skills.
This training ends with a practice session on writing simple scientific papers in groups, which willevaluated continuously by accompanying teachers. This activity is expected to not only increasestudents' writing skills, but also build a strong foundation for academic skillsthem in the future.
