Training on the Application of Probiotics in Tilapia Cultivation at the Wihdatul Ulum Islamic Boarding School

The Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Indonesian Muslim University (UMI), held Community Service (PkM) activities at the Wihdatul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, UMI Waqf Foundation, located in Borissalo Village, Gowa Regency, on Thursday, September 19 2024.


This activity is part of an internal grant program funded by the UMI Community Service Institute (LPkM). On this occasion, training was conducted that focused on the application of probiotics in tilapia cultivation.


The training began with an explanation of the importance of probiotics in the fisheries sector delivered by the main resource person, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jayadi, MP. In his presentation, he emphasized that probiotics play an important role in supporting fish health, reducing the risk of disease, and improving water quality in cultivation environments.


"This training is a strategic step to increase the productivity and quality of tilapia cultivation in Islamic boarding schools. By utilizing probiotics, cultivation results can be increased, while strengthening food security in the community," he said.


Apart from providing general knowledge about probiotics, this training also presents practical solutions to overcome various challenges that are often encountered in tilapia cultivation. Prof. Jayadi provided a number of practical suggestions regarding handling fish diseases and improving feed quality.


Mrs. Hasma, Head of MTs Wihdatul Ulum, expressed her appreciation for this training, which according to her provided great benefits for the coaches and students.


"We were greatly helped by this training. It is hoped that this new knowledge and skills can strengthen our abilities in cultivating tilapia and contribute to the food security of the Islamic boarding school community," he said.


Amri, one of the supervisors and Arabic language teachers at the Islamic boarding school, also expressed his impressions of this training.


"This training provides very valuable new insight. We now understand better how to make and apply probiotics in tilapia cultivation. This knowledge really helps us in dealing with cultivation obstacles and increasing optimal results," he said.


After the theory presentation session, the activity continued with direct practice in making probiotics guided by Hamdillah, S.Pi., M.Sc. In this practical session, participants are taught the steps for making probiotics and how to apply them to fish ponds. Apart from that, participants are also trained to monitor fish health and maintain water quality as part of sustainable aquaculture management.
