LEGAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE FORM OF EDUCATION AND LEGAL AWARENESS CONCERNING PROTECTION OF CHILD VICTIMS OF ABUSE IN MADRASAH ALIYAH WIHDATUL ULUM BONTOKASSI VILLAGE, GOWA DISTRICT
UMI Encourages Protection of Children Victims of Bullying in Bontokassi Through Legal and Islamic Education
Gowa, 24 November 2025 — An innovative and value-based step was taken by the 2025 PKM team of the Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) at Madrasah Aliyah Wihdatul Ulum (MAWI), Bontokassi Village, Gowa Regency, on Saturday, 19 November 2025. This activity highlights the importance of legal education and awareness of child protection through a humanist, educative and Islamic values-based approach. With the theme: "Legal Education and Awareness regarding Protection of Children Victims of Bullying”, this community service presents a new breakthrough in creating safe, inclusive and just schools. This service was chaired by Dr.H.Salle,SH.,MH and accompanied by a team of lecturers, Dr.Mirnawanti Wahab,SH.,M.H. With the help of 2 students, this reached more than 50 to 60 students and 8 teachers from various grade levels, through a series of interesting and meaningful interactive activities.
Educate with a Smile, Not Fear
Instead of traditional, rigid teaching methods, the UMI PKM team presented a short drama depicting real cases of bullying in the school environment, followed by a reflective discussion session. Students are invited to empathize, understand the psychological impact of bullying, and know their rights based on Law Number 35 of 2014, amendments to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection and the policies of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.
Activities also involve mediation simulations where students play the roles of victim, perpetrator, and mediator — equipping them with healthy communication and conflict solution skills.
"I didn't know that I had the right to report. But now, I'm not afraid anymore," said Farida, a class XI student who was involved in the simulation.
Birth of a Generation of Young Leaders who Care
One of the main innovations of this Community Service is the formation of the Bullying Care Student group, which has now been formed in five classes. This group has an active role in monitoring the school environment, helping friends who are disturbed, and reporting to the guidance and counseling teacher if necessary.
Chairman of Madrasah Aliya Wihdatul Ulum, Mr. Abs Rasyid S.Pd.I, appreciated PKM UMI's steps which not only provide knowledge, but also build a culture of courage to speak:
"This is the first program that combines law, religion and empathy in a balanced way. We will make this an annual school policy."
Real Impact in Implementing Community Service
Based on the initial and final surveys conducted by the team, the results were encouraging: 89% or around 58 students stated that they understood more about their rights as children who are victims of bullying.
75% 49 students are ready to report cases of bullying directly. All teachers expressed high interest in integrating legal education material into routine learning.
A Safer Future
The UMI Community Service Team plans to continue this success by compiling a BK teacher training module
"From one madrasa in a small village, we believe we can create a national value-based child protection movement," said Dr. Salle, SH, MH.
Project Background
This program is the result of the UMI 2025 PKM Team initiative funded by the Indonesian Muslim University LPKM, focusing on real social problems in society: poverty in children's legal understanding and the absence of a safe space to report.
Conclusion:
Education is not only about values, but also about justice, courage and protection. In the midst of the often oppressive digital current, PKM UMI in Bontokassi has become a small light that shows the way for Indonesian children to grow up in a safe and hopeful environment.
