STRENGTHENING THE ROLE OF HUSBANDS IN PREPAREDNESS FOR CHILDHOOD COMPLICATIONS THROUGH THE HUSBAND ALERT PROGRAM IN BULOA VILLAGE, TALLO DISTRICT, MAKASSAR CITY

Makassar, 19 November 2025 – Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) lecturers heldcommunity service activities with the theme "Strengthening the Role of Husbands in Preparedness."Childbirth Complications Through the Husband Alert Program in Buloa Village, Tallo DistrictMakassar City”. This activity was carried out in Buloa Village, Tallo City DistrictMakassar, on September 27 2025, attended by 34 participants consisting of midwives,Head of Village, health cadres, Posyandu cadres, as well as pregnant women and husbands.

The aim of the activity is to Strengthen the Role of Husbands in Preparing for Childbirth ComplicationsThrough the Husband Alert Program, the aim is to increase husbands' involvement inefforts to prevent the risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth. This activity is in the backgroundThis is due to the low level of participation of husbands in accompanying their wives during this periodpregnancy, which has an impact on delays in decision making when it occurscomplications. Reduces the risk of complications and maternal death. Positive impactHusband's involvement includes quick decisions when complications occur, logistical preparation andBetter mental health before giving birth.

This service team is led by Dr. Sundari, SST., MPH, a Study Program lecturerMidwifery at the Faculty of Public Health, Indonesian Muslim University, who was accompaniedby Dr. Samsualam, S.KM, S. Kep, Ns,. M.Kes is a lecturer at the Faculty of Nursing Study ProgramUMI Public Health. In carrying out the service, the UMI Lecturer team providededucate participants regarding the importance of basic knowledge of birth complications,risk factors for complications in childbirth, danger signs of childbirth, the role of the husband in alertnesspreventing birth complications, preventing P4K preparedness using counseling methodsin the form of interactive lectures, small group discussions, and case studies. This activity canprovides benefits including increasing family preparedness in facingchildbirth, with increasing knowledge and the husband's active role, the family becomes moreBe prepared to face possible complications during labor and therefore the risk of delayshandling may be reduced. Reduces the risk of complications and speeds up treatmentemergency. Husbands who understand the danger signs of pregnancy and childbirth canmake decisions more quickly, so that pregnant women can get help immediatelynecessary medical. Encouraging the realization of an alert family culture in societyeducation and collaboration with cadres and health workers, this activity helpscreating a community environment that cares more about the safety of mothers and babies, saidDr. Sundari, SST., MPH., in his speech.

Participation of the Buloa Village government in the service activity "Strengthening the Role of Husbandsin Childbirth Complication Preparedness through the Alert Husband Program” is very visiblefrom the planning stage to implementation. The sub-district government provides supportfull of facilitating initial meetings, helping coordinate activity schedules,as well as ensuring effective communication between the service team and RT/RW headsand local health cadres. This administrative support is an important basis inexpedite the process of implementing activities. Apart from that, the sub-district government also participatedcontributed to the mobilization of participants, especially husbands in the Buloa area, toattend counseling and training. Through the dissemination of information, official announcementssub-districts, as well as coordination with posyandu cadres and community leaders, the government was successfulincrease citizen participation so that activities are carried out with a sufficient number of participantsoptimal. This involvement shows the sub-district government's commitment to supportincreasing public knowledge and preparedness for childbirth complications.The sub-district government also provides moral and policy support by attendingactivities, opening events, and emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the community andhealth workers in improving the safety of mothers and babies. This presence and supportprovide positive encouragement for participants, while strengthening the sustainability of the ProgramStandby Husband in the Buloa area. The active role of sub-district government ensures that resultsDevotion does not only stop at extension activities, but can continue as
joint movement to increase childbirth preparedness in the community.

This service activity is funded by the Institute for Research and Community Service(LPkM) UMI. Through this funding, it is hoped that this activity can reach more peopleparticipants and provide a broad impact on improving the health of pregnant women, giving birth,postpartum in the region.

The husband's involvement is alert in various aspects of his wife's life, especially in the processpregnancy, childbirth and postpartum This contributes significantly to reducing the riskmaternal and neonatal deaths. With support from her husband, pregnant women are more likely to become pregnantmotivated to undergo regular pregnancy checks, consume adequate nutrition, andfollow medical advice. The husband also helps prepare all the birth needsso that it runs smoothly.

This community service activity is part of UMI's commitment to continueplay an active role in supporting the government in public health programs,The husband's role is to be alert in accompanying his wife during pregnancy, childbirth and pregnancyPostpartum is very important to support the health and safety of mothers and babies. Husband is alertit's not just about physical presence, but also about emotional support, retrievalright decisions, and active involvement in maintaining family health. Husband is alertcan help recognize the danger signs of pregnancy and childbirth, and ensurethe wife immediately got the medical help she needed.
