PKM PEPPER PERDU TECHNOLOGY IN MARUSU DISTRICT, MAROS DISTRICT

Lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture and Bioremediation of Mined Lands (Faperta – Biotam) Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) Makassar held Assistance and Counseling on Plant Pepper Cultivation Technology Innovations in Pattene hamlet, Temmappaduae Village,  Maros.  This Community Service Activity (PKM) will be held from 11 October to 13 October 2025 as a form of Tridharma of Higher Education activities for lecturers.  This activity is part of the UMI Community Service Institution (LPkM) Flagship Program which is held every year.

Based on information from the local RT head, the community, especially young people from Pattene hamlet, generally still have free time that can be used for productive activities. Apart from that, there are yards around them that have not been utilized, just left empty or overgrown with weeds.

The partners accompanied were members of the Pattene Creative Youth Youth Communication Forum Group (Forkompak) who live in Pattene hamlet, Temmappaduae Village, Maros. Forkompak was formed seven years ago and the group members are generally environmentalists and usually carry out activities during independence holidays.

The aim of this Community Service (PkM) is to assist Partners in improving Partners' abilities and skills in cultivating Pepper Perdu in order to utilize yard land for productive, effective and efficient activities. The specific target to be achieved is the utilization of yard land which has been left empty and neglected, by planting Lada Perdu.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Netty, MS., as Team Leader stated that the Shrub Pepper Cultivation Technology is different from cultivating ordinary pepper or climbing pepper plants. Shrub pepper plants grow without the need for climbing trees, making them suitable for planting in the yard. Dr. Ir. Nurliani, MP., and Ir. Hidrawati, MP., as a member of the service team also provided counseling and was assisted in the technology for preparing seeds and how to plant pepper bushes in the yard. Apart from that, counseling was also provided on how to fertilize and maintain pepper bushes after they grow.  On this occasion, UMI Makassar also handed over agricultural equipment to members of the Forkompak group.

Meanwhile, representing the Chair of the Forkompak Group, Muhammad Reyhan, Rahmaniar and Muhammad Husni Husefa expressed their appreciation for this assistance, especially since the community, especially local young people, are very enthusiastic about activities related to the environment. Pepper shrubs planted in the yard can be developed into a business that has economic value for the family. This is in line with UMI Makassar's commitment to supporting the community's economic income through technology and innovation-based community service which is expected to improve the welfare of the local community.
