Rehabilitation of Missing Teeth and Training in Denture Care in Coastal Communities

As an integral part of implementing the Tridharma of higher education, service activities tosociety is a concrete manifestation of academics' contribution to responding to health needs incoastal areas.

On Wednesday, October 15 2025, the Indonesian Muslim University Service Team(UMI) carries out activities entitled rehabilitation of missing teeth and training in denture carefor the coastal communities of Lae-Lae Island.

This activity is part of the Institute's programUMI Community Service and through funding support from the UMI Waqf Foundation, led by drg. Maqhfirah Amiruddin, Sp.Pros., lecturerFaculty of Dentistry, together with Suryanti S., Amd.Keb., M.Keb., lecturer at the Faculty of HealthThe community, as well as involving students from the FKG Dentist Education Study ProgramUMI.

This activity is in partnership with the Makkasau Community Health Center, Makassar City, in direct coordinationwith the health center dentist and his staff. Lae-Lae Island, which is located in a group of islandsSpermonde and administratively is in the Lae-Lae Village area, Ujung DistrictPandang, was chosen as the activity location because of limited access to dental health services incoastal areas.

In this activity, the Service Team provides education regardingthe importance of rehabilitation of missing teeth and procedures for caring for dentures to the public fromlocal community. The material presented includes the function of dentures in restorationfacial aesthetics, increasing self-confidence, improving speech articulation, restoringchewing ability, as well as preventing the remaining teeth from shifting. Emphasis is also givenon the importance of maintaining dentures, and making regular visits to the dentist every timesix months.

The activity closed with a direct training session regarding denture care,accompanied by the distribution of educational materials in the form of posters and brochures, as well as souvenirs in the form of brushes and pastatooth. The high enthusiasm of the participants was reflected in the attendance which reached the maximum target andactive discussion.

Participants expressed their appreciation for this activity becauseprovide a better understanding of the importance of rehabilitation of missing teeth andProper and continuous denture care.
