Synergy of Introduction to Basic English and BTQ in the Context of Strengthening Character Education (PPK) for Assisted Children at the Ummu Aiman Orphanage

The community service program which is concerned with the integration of basic English learning and Al-Qur'an Reading and Writing (BTQ) was successfully implemented by the Service Team from the Faculty of Letters, Communication Sciences and Education (FSIKP) of the Indonesian Muslim University. This activity was carried out at the Ummu Aiman Orphanage, Jalan Beruang, Makassar, starting October 12 2025 and received a warm welcome from partners.

Carrying the theme "Synergy of Introduction to Basic English and BTQ to Strengthen Character Education (PPK) for Assisted Children," this program not only focuses on improving cognitive abilities, but also instilling noble character values. The implementation team consists of Sulastri, S.S., M.Pd., as chairman, accompanied by Ratnawati, S.S., M.Pd., and Dr. Salim Hasan, S.Ag., M.Pd.I., as well as accompanying students from the English Language and English Literature Education Study Program who took an active role during the training process.

Sulastri, as team leader, said that the children showed extraordinary interest in learning. They are very enthusiastic about participating in each learning session which is packaged interactively. "We apply fun learning methods accompanied by visual media to make the material easier to understand, both in English and BTQ," he explained.

He added that the integration of BTQ in this program aims to balance foreign language literacy skills with spiritual and moral strengthening. Learning is carried out with an approach that does not feel boring, oriented towards character building through training in discipline, responsibility and cooperation in every activity.

This program closed with positive achievements. The target children show increased confidence in pronouncing English vocabulary as well as progress in reading and writing the Al-Qur'an. The service team plans to document the results of activities in the form of digital publication media such as videos and news releases via the official LPkM UMI website and submit them to national journals. It is hoped that this step will be an inspiration for similar programs in other social institutions as an effort to produce a generation of Muslims who are intelligent, have character and are ready to face global challenges.
