UMI PKM TEAM Holds Education on Energy Efficient Building Design Strategies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) through the Community Service Institute (LPKM) has once again demonstrated its commitment to making real contributions to society through the international Community Service (PKM) program. This activity took place in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with a focus on empowering partners to create energy efficient buildings.
Synergy to Save Energy
The PKM program, which will take place on November 21 2024, aims to help partners, Sanggar Guidance Muhammadiyah, overcome the challenge of the progressively high cost of electricity consumption in Malaysia. The PKM team consists of two lecturers, namely Ir. Arinda Wahyuni, ST, M.Ars as head of this PKM activity and Ir. Nur Fadliah Baso, ST, MT, and two UMI students provided education regarding energy-efficient building design strategies and selecting efficient electronic equipment.
Through an educational approach, participants are taught passive design principles, such as setting building orientation, using natural ventilation, and installing shading or canopies to maximize energy efficiency. Apart from that, training in selecting electronic equipment such as LED lights also supports efforts to reduce electricity consumption significantly.
UMI LPKM Support for Cross-Country Collaboration
As the main driver of this program, LPKM UMI provides financial support and coordination to ensure the success of the activity. This program is also part of the effort to implement Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), which provides teaching experience outside campus while increasing the relevance of lecturers' research to community needs.
Positive Impact for Partners
The results of this activity show a significant impact:
- Cost Efficiency: Partners are now able to reduce electricity costs by implementing the energy saving strategies that have been taught.
- Practical Guide: The energy efficient building strategy guide booklet provided is a source of sustainable information.
- Environmental Awareness: Education about energy efficiency also encourages partners to support environmental sustainability by reducing carbon footprints.
Program Sustainability
This PKM activity does not stop at short education. The UMI team will continue to accompany partners through remote monitoring and discussions to ensure the implementation of energy saving strategies runs optimally. This program is also expected to be the beginning of a long-term collaboration between UMI and partners in Malaysia.
With this activity, the Indonesian Muslim University and LPKM UMI reaffirm their role as educational institutions capable of contributing directly to society, both at the local and international levels, in creating innovative and sustainable solutions.
