Indonesian Muslim University  (UMI) as one of the best private universities in Eastern Indonesia according to the Director General of Higher Education and ranked in the top 10 out of 3,900 private universities in Indonesia and thirty-fourth in PTN/PTS in Indonesia in 2015 as well as the most favorite private universities in Makassar according to the Survey Results of the 21st Edition of Guide to Choosing a Higher Education 2016 Tempo Publishing has developed a strategic plan, including various development programs which are expected to provide direction for UMI's development towards becoming a World Class University(World Class University), through increasing the capacity of organizations that are healthy, efficient and effective so that they can provide higher education based onGood University Governance.Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) as a university has the obligations of higher education, namely education, research and community service in accordance with Law Number 20 of 2003 Article 20 Paragraph 2 concerning the National Education System. As stated in Article 47 paragraph 1 of Law Number 12 of 2012 concerning Higher Education, "Community Service is the activity of the Academic Community in practicing and cultivating Science and Technology to advance general welfare and educate the nation's life."

Community Service is one of the dharmas of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. Community Service (PkM) must play a role in advancing general welfare and making the nation's life more intelligent. Based on Article 61 paragraph 2 of the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 49 of 2014 concerning National Higher Education Standards, it states that "universities are obliged to have a strategic plan for community service which is part of the higher education strategic plan".

To implement the Tri Darma of Higher Education, the UMI Community Service Institute (LPkM) has helped the community a lot, especially in the Eastern Region of Indonesia. Since the 1980s, it has pioneered Assisted Partner Villages in several districts in the provinces of South Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Ternate and Southeast Sulawesi. To date, LPKM UMI has trained 33 Village Partner Villages as well as 97 Village Service Scholars (SPD) and Village Service Personnel (TPD) spread across various UMI Partner Villages. Apart from that, it also fosters economically disadvantaged students (supported students) for 2015 - 2017 totaling 516 people from 12 faculties. Through the Fostered Partner Village, it is hoped that LPkM UMI will find it easier to interact with the community, help the community solve the problems they face and can increase cooperation based on Islamic brotherhood.

UMI as an Educational and Da'wah Institution realizes that community service is a necessity, which is the moral duty and responsibility of every UMI academic community in carrying out humanitarian duties. For this reason, UMI has determined the concentration of science and technology in rural development as the main scientific pattern, which is very relevant to the direction of national development policy.

Indonesian Muslim University as the largest private university in Eastern Indonesia has experience in implementing community service programs. Community service activity program under the Community Service Institute (LPkM). Community service activity programs that are routinely carried out by LPkM UMI can be categorized as follows:

  • Empowerment of rural communities through education and da'wah
  • Fostering partnerships through fostered partner villages by involving all potential

These activities are described in the form:

  • Placing each prospective lecturer to serve in a UMI assisted village before being active on campus
  • Placing Village Service Scholars (SPD) and Village Teaching Personnel (TPD)
  • Dai's Leave Program for lecturers to go to villages supported by UMI
  • Procurement of clean water and assistance for the construction or rehabilitation of mosques and prayer rooms in remote areas with funds in the form of waqf from third parties
  • Every semester, students are sent as part of Real Work Lectures (KKN), both Regular KKN, PPMD ​​KKN and KKN.
