The UMI PkM Team Holds Education on Making Alternative Wall Panels to Replace Wooden Boards from Water Hyacinth Plants and Plastic Waste at the "Rasa Bersama" Community Waste Bank RW 005, Manggala Village, Manggala District, Makassar City

Funded by the Community Service Institute (LPkM)  Indonesian Muslim University (UMI), the PkM Team of UMI lecturers held a Community Service (PkM) with the title Education on Making Alternative Wall Panels to Replace Wooden Planks from Water Hyacinth Plants and Plastic Waste in the "Rasa Bersama" Waste Bank Community RW 005, Manggala Village, Manggala District, Makassar City.

This activity took place in several stages, starting with the provision of educational material to partner communities, then manufacturing practice carried out by the UMI PkM team and Partners which was carried out on Thursday, September 19 2024 in the "Rasa Bersama" Waste Bank community RW 005, Manggala Village, Manggala District, Makassar City. This activity was also attended by the Chairman of RW 005 Mr. Jumain Baso, S.sos and his wife. The next stage was direct training and practice by the Rasa Bersama Waste Bank partners, which was attended by the director and members, which was held at the Structure Laboratory of the UMI Architecture Study Program on Monday 7 October 2024, then a product handover was carried out as a result of the activities and collaboration of both parties. The final stage of the product produced was introduced at the BUMN Exhibition on 24 – 27 October 2024 at Transtudio Mall with the theme "Creating" and what is encouraging is that in November 2024, BUMN Pegadaian approved the Rasa Bersama Waste Bank as a New Development because of its product innovation in the form of using water hyacinth and plastic waste into alternative wall panels to replace wooden planks.

This service activity was led by Dr. Ir. Juhana Said, ST., M.T. (Lecturer in the Architecture Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, UMI), and accompanied by Ir. Muhammad Syarif Burhanuddin, ST., M.T. (Lecturer in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UMI) and 2 students from the Architecture Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, UMI.

Dr. Ir. Juhana Said, ST., M.T. as head of the UMI PkM Team, said that the large amount of plastic waste and the proliferation of water hyacinth in the environment are no longer a frightening threat with the innovation and skills possessed by community members. Apart from that, the product introduced to partners is the result of research in the form of an alternative panel to replace wooden boards, where wood material is no longer widely recommended for use in the world of construction due to environmental sustainability factors. For this reason, the UMI PkM Team hopes that the knowledge and skills that have been given to the "rasa Bersama" Waste Bank group can become provisions for improving their economy so that they can also take a role in maintaining environmental sustainability.

In this Community Service Activity, there were many participants present, including Mrs. Wahidah as director of the "Rasa Bersama" Waste Bank, and 20 members of the assisted group along with the head of the local RW.  The participants were very enthusiastic, as seen by the many discussions that took place during the activity process, and the results of the questionnaire which showed increasing scores and the residents' high hopes for increasing their income, continued Dr. Ir. Juhana Said, ST., M.T.
