Legal Development in the Form of Legal Education and Awareness regarding Women's Empowerment for Equality to Increase Participation in Development
Gowa, South Sulawesi — The Indonesian Nuslim University lecturer team carried out Community Service (PKM) activities with the theme"Legal Development in the Form of Legal Education and Awareness regarding Women's Empowerment for Equality to Increase Participation in Environmental Development"in Lanna Village, Gowa Regency (Tuesday, 07 October 2025). This activity is part of the flagship program of the UMI Community Service Institute (LPkM) in 2025.
Service Team Team Leader Dr. St. Ulfah, S.H., M.H. and Team Member Dr. Satri Hasyim, S.H., M.H. This activity is a concrete step in encouraging women's active role in sustainable development, especially in the field of environmental conservation. This program, which involves elements of academia, local government and society, aims to provide women with a comprehensive legal understanding so that they can be empowered socially, economically and environmentally. Through an educational and dialogical approach, participants are invited to understand the importance of gender equality in development as well as legal rights that protect the role of women in society.
Dr. ST. Ulfah explained that this activity stems from the fact that women are often the ones most affected by environmental problems, but actually have great potential in preserving it. "Women have a strategic role in forming environmentally friendly habits at the family and community level. Through legal education and awareness of their rights and responsibilities, they can become the driving force of sustainable development," she said.
In this activity, participants were provided with training on the basics of environmental law, gender equality policies, and forms of women's participation in development. The discussion also highlighted how women can play an active role in maintaining environmental cleanliness, managing household waste, and initiating greening activities in the surrounding environment. According to Dr. Satri Hasyim, PKM is also a real manifestation of synergy between universities and the community. Through this activity, the academic community not only transfers knowledge, but also learns from the social dynamics of society at the local level.
The sub-district government also provided full support for this activity. "We really appreciate this activity because it helps increase legal awareness in the community, especially for women, to be more active in protecting the environment," said Lurah Lanna. Apart from legal and environmental material, participants were also involved in practical training sessions such as managing household waste, utilizing used goods into economically valuable products, as well as environmental advocacy strategies at the community level.
The hope is that women not only understand their legal role, but also have real skills to take part. This PKM activity in Lanna Village ends with a joint commitment to continue developing legal and environmentally based women's empowerment programs. The PKM team hopes that similar activities can continue in other areas of Gowa Regency and become an inspiration for other regions in Indonesia. "A society that is legally aware and environmentally conscious is the main foundation for sustainable development. When women are empowered, social progress and environmental sustainability can go hand in hand,".
