Education on Wound Self-Medication and Making Corn Hair-Based Herbal Topical Preparations as an Alternative Treatment for Minor Wounds in Paddinging Village

In an effort to increase public awareness about managing minor injuries independentlyand sustainable, a team of community service lecturers from the Muslim University Faculty of PharmacyIndonesia, chaired by apt. A. Hasrawati, S.Farm., M.Si. with members of apt. VinaPurnamasari, S.Farm., M.Si. and apt. Sitti Amirah, S.Farm., M.Si. as well as undergraduate pharmacy studentscarrying out educational and practical activities in Paddinging Village, Takalar Regency. Activityentitled "Education on Wound Self-Medication and Making Herbal Topical Preparations.""Corn Hair Based as an Alternative Treatment for Minor Wounds in Paddinging Village"took place on Tuesday, November 28 2025, with the main partners being PKK women from Paddinging villagewhich involved 20 participants.

This activity aims to increase the knowledge and skills of the community, in particularMothers, when self-medicating minor wounds, use natural ingredientseasy to find in the surrounding area. Activities are carried out in a structured manner forempowering the community in terms of wound self-medication, by combining approacheseducational and applicable.

The implementation of the activity begins with a pre-test to measure the participants' initial level of knowledgeregarding the types of wounds, causes of injuries, and steps that must be taken andAvoid when treating minor injuries. The pre-test results show that the majorityParticipants did not fully understand the basic principles of correct and safe wound management.Next, the implementing team provided education regarding the concept of wound self-medication,includes recognition of minor wounds, the importance of wound hygiene, and selection of topical preparationsappropriate. The material is presented in simple and interactive language to make it easyunderstood by participants.

After the counseling session, the activity continued with direct practice in making herbal ointmentscorn hair based as an alternative treatment for minor wounds. Corn silk was chosen becausecontains flavonoid and tannin compounds which have anti-inflammatory and speeding potentialwound healing. Participants seemed enthusiastic about participating in each stage of preparation, startingfrom a simple extraction process to mixing ointment ingredients.

"We deliberately chose corn silk because apart from being abundant in Takalar, research"It shows that the flavonoid and polyphenol content can accelerate wound epithelialization."said A. Hasrawati, Head of the Community Service Team.

At the end of the activity, a post-test and evaluation was carried out to assess the increase in knowledge as wellparticipant skills. The evaluation results show an increase in understandingsignificantly related to the concept of self-medication and the use of herbal ingredients as alternative treatmentsminor injuries.

Vina Purnamasari, one of the team members said that this activity was part offrom the commitment of Indonesian Muslim University academics to empower village communitiesthrough health education and scientific and scientific use of local natural resourcessustainable. "We hope that this activity can raise public awareness ofthe importance of proper wound management and wise use of natural ingredientssupports family health," he said.

One of the participants, Mrs. Rahma, admitted that it was very helpful and enthusiastic to practiceknowledge acquired at home. "We hope that events like this will be held often. Knowledge"Very useful for the family, especially since the ingredients are all around us," added Sadaria,another participant who is also the local PKK chairman.

With this activity, it is hoped that the PKK women in Paddinging Village will not only havebetter knowledge of minor wound care, but also practical skills inmake simple herbal preparations that can be used independently at home. VillagePaddinging can be an example of an assisted village that is self-sufficient in health and opennew economic opportunities through home production of herbal preparations.

This activity confirms the commitment of UMI lecturers and UMI LPkM in implementing ittridharma of higher education, as well as being a concrete manifestation of the contribution of academics inimproving the quality of life of society through science and wisdom-based innovationlocal.
