Increasing Fishermen's Income Through Sustainable Fishing and Post-Harvest Technology

Ernaningsih, Lecturer at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Indonesian Muslim University, carries out community service activities in Bawasalo Village, Segeri District, Kab. Pangkep.

Community Service Activities (PkM) with the theme Post-Harvest Technology (stripping) Crabfish and Sustainable Fishing which took place on Saturday, October 11 2025, by the Lecturer Team at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Indonesian Muslim University, namely Dr.Ir. Ernaningsih, MP and Dr. Ir. Hamsiah, Msi and 2 students, in Bawasalo Village, Segeri District, Kab. Pangkep.

Providing nets to partner groups for catching crabThis activity is an implementation of Community Service (PkM), which is one of the embodiments of the Tri Darma of Higher Education carried out by the Indonesian Muslim University Community Service Institute (LPkM).

The aim of this PkM activity is to provide education and skills to the community on how to utilize crab shelling and catching technology in a sustainable manner to increase the income and welfare of the fishing community and their families in collaboration with the Mitra Dermaga Indah Bawasalo group. This activity was carried out at the residence of the head of the Mitra group, which was attended by a group of fishermen and crab processors of 20 people, chaired by Aripin. Also present was Fisheries Extension Officer Agustinawti, S.P as companion to the partners.

Crab crabs are an economically valuable fishery commodity which is one of the main catches of fishermen in the Bawasalo sub-district who currently catch them using gill nets. Fishermen have limited facilities and fishing equipment so that their fishing is concentrated in coastal areas so that their current catch is not much and the crabs they get are small.

Dr. Ir. Ernaningsih as head of the service team conveyed to the partner group the importance of maintaining crab resources so that they remain available in nature/the sea. The catch of small crabs and the decreasing number of catches is a problem because these small crabs have not yet matured and spawned, which has an impact on the sustainability of the crabs.

On the other hand, the small size caught will affect the selling value of the crab. One way to increase the selling value of crab meat is by stripping technology so that the crab meat can be utilized optimally and increase the value of the crab meat.

Through this community service program, it is hoped that it can provide knowledge and change the community's mindset to carry out fishing activities according to sustainable principles and provide technology skills for stripping crab so that the increase in selling value can be greater. The community's considerable appreciation at the service location is a hope for future increases in income.

Monitoring is carried out to find out how effective this activity is after the next 1-2 months.
