
UMI Lecturer Team Conducts Education on Healthy Snacks to Prevent Early Age Diabetes at SD Inpres Parang, Lanna Village, Parangloe Gowa
Gowa – Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) lecturer team chaired by Dr. Fatmah Afrianty Gobel, SKM., M.Epid., from the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) UMI, held a community service activity in the form of education about "Healthy, Halal and Thoyib Snacks as an Effort to Prevent Early Age Diabetes Mellitus" on Saturday, 26 October 2024. This activity, which was carried out at Parang Inpres Elementary School, Lanna Village, Parangloe District, Gowa Regency, aims to increase student and teacher awareness about the importance of choose healthy snacks to prevent the risk of diabetes in children.
This service team consists of Dr. Fatmah Afrianty Gobel, SKM., M.Epid., as chairman; Dr. Asrini Safitri, M.Kes., Sp.GK (K), AIFO-K, who is a clinical nutritionist and lecturer at the UMI Faculty of Medicine; and Dr. Sumiaty, SKM., M.Kes., lecturer in nutrition at FKM UMI. They conveyed the importance of the concept of food that is not only healthy but also halal and thoyib or good for the body.
According to Dr. Fatmah Afrianty Gobel, education about healthy snacks among elementary school students is very crucial. "With a proper understanding of healthy snacks, we can help children recognize foods that are good for their health and reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus at an early age. This education is also expected to provide an understanding of halal food that meets hygiene and quality standards," he said.In this activity, dr. Asrini Safitri explained the nutritional intake needed by children at growing age and the risks of foods high in sugar and low in nutrition on long-term health. Meanwhile, Dr. Sumiaty invited students to get to know the nutritional content of various types of snacks that they often consume. Students are invited to interact through presentations and screening of special educational videos so that they can understand the importance of choosing healthy food and drinks wisely.
The lecture, discussion and question and answer methods as well as showing educational videos made students enthusiastic about listening until the end of the activity. Apart from attractive prizes given by the team for students who asked questions or answered questions from the service team, interesting prizes were also given to students who achieved the highest score inpost test.
The Principal of SD Inpres Parang, Mrs. Maryam, S.Pd., expressed her appreciation for the implementation of this program. "We are very grateful to the UMI lecturer team who have helped us in providing health education on snack foods and drinks. With this activity, our students will have a better understanding of choosing and sorting foods that are good from dangerous ones, as well as their impact on their health," he said.
Through this activity, the UMI Lecturer Team hopes to help form healthy eating habits from an early age, which will become the basis for efforts to prevent diabetes mellitus in the future. It is hoped that this education regarding healthy, halal and thoyib snacks will be able to create a generation that is healthier and aware of the importance of balanced nutrition in everyday life.
