UMI Lecturers Conduct Calcium and Phosphate Profile Level Examinations in Patients Undergoing Consistent Hemodialysis at Ibnu Sina Hospital

In order to increase public awareness and health, especially dialysis patients, a public education activity and examination of calcium and phosphorus levels have been carried out in Makassar. This activity aims to detect early bone mineral disorders that are often experienced by dialysis patients at Ibnu Sina Hospital Makassar.

Dialysis patients have a high risk of experiencing bone mineral disorders because the dialysis process can disrupt the balance of electrolytes and minerals in the body. Imbalanced calcium and phosphorus levels can cause various health problems, such as osteoporosis, osteopenia, and even kidney damage.

This lay education activity was attended by around 30 dialysis patients and their families. The counseling material was delivered by a specialist in internal medicine at Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar. Where the material includes:

  1. The importance of maintaining bone mineral balance.
  2. Symptoms and signs of bone mineral disorders.
  3. How to maintain healthy bones with a balanced diet.
  4. The importance of checking calcium and phosphorus levels regularly.

Calcium and phosphorus level checks are carried out free of charge to all participants. Examination results show that around 30% of patients have unbalanced calcium and phosphorus levels.

One of the participants, Mr Andi, said, "I am very happy to be able to take part in this activity. I just realized the importance of maintaining bone mineral balance for my health."

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Indah Lestari, said, "This activity is very important to increase awareness of dialysis patients about the importance of maintaining bone mineral balance. We hope that this activity can be carried out regularly."
