
UMI trains Moncongloe Lappara Maros Village to Process Toga Plants (Family Medicinal Plants) into Herbal Products for Health
A team of service lecturers from the Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) and students trained partners in Moncongloe Lappara Village, Maros Regency in processing TOGA plants into various products, such as herbal tea, traditional herbal medicine, bay leaf chips and used cooking oil soap.
Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) is one of the oldest and largest private universities in Eastern Indonesia, located in Makassar, South Sulawesi. This university was founded on June 23 1954 and is under the auspices of the UMI Waqf Foundation.
This community service activity was carried out through a Community Empowerment scheme by UMI Students from 1 โ 31 July 2025.
The theme of the activity is "Increasing the Potential and Promotion of the Healthy Village of Moncongloe Lappara Maros Through the Development of TOGA Diversified Processing into Digital Technopreneur-Based Herbal Products".
This program received funding support from the Directorate of Research and Community Service, Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (DIKTISAINTEK).
The implementation location is in one of the villages of Maros Regency, namely Moncongloe Lappara Maros village.
Moncongloe Lappara Maros village partners are trained to process toga plants into various kinds of herbal products, such as herbal tea, traditional herbal medicine, bay leaf chips, which are done with skills that have been socialized by PMM members.

1. Herbal Tea
The benefits of this herbal tea are:
Herbal tea containing ginger, lemongrass and olong tea is known to have antiviral and antibacterial properties which can help the body's immune system, improve digestion, help lose weight and relieve flu.
2. Herbal Medicine
The benefits of this herbal medicine are:
From ginger turmeric, lemongrass can reduce pain during menstruation, is useful as an anti-oxidant (quite high in vitamin C), and as an antibiotic.
3. Bay Leaf Chips
The benefits of bay leaf chips are:
For health, it is a healthy snack because it contains nutrients from the basic ingredients of bay leaves, without preservatives, coloring or artificial flavoring.
Apart from training in making several of these products, partners are also provided with skills to package several products that have been made, as well as training in product sales promotions.
Head of the implementation team, Dr. apt. Sukmawati Syarif, S.Farm., M.Kes said that the aim of this program is to make the Moncongloe Lappara Maros Village partner an educational and training agent in the community in an effort to manage TOGA plants into various kinds of herbal products such as herbal tea, traditional herbal medicine, chips and bay leaves.
"With this activity, partners are able to develop a healthy and economically valuable toga plant processing business," said Dr. apt. Sukmawati Syarif, S.Farm., M.Kes.
The service team also consists of Ir.St.Hajrah Mansyur, S.Kom., M.CsM.Ta and Dr. Muhammad Nur Abdi, SE., MM. PMM members handed over various production equipment to support the sustainability of PMM's activities.
The Head of Moncongloe Lappara Maros Village, Sirajuddin, S.AP., appreciated the activities carried out. He hopes this program will continue in the future.
Several partners who have undergone training in managing toga plants into products, stated that they were greatly helped by this PMM activity, because this activity greatly increased their knowledge and insight by utilizing toga plants into products that have a higher selling value.
Moncongloe Lappara Maros Village is known to have abundant potential for toga plants, especially rhizome plants, but many people do not know how to manage them into herbal products.
Through this activity, it is hoped that the partners will know that the knowledge that has been provided can be useful for the partners and the community in developing village potential, such as crops.
